Best Volunteer Reviews 2017

Volunteer Name: Anna Malone
Project Location: Belize
Volunteered At: Orphanage

What was your favorite memory of this trip?
My favorite memory of my trip was on my second days at the children’s home. I was coloring with one of the little boys. He colored in a princess and handed me the picture saying, “This is a pretty princess. This is you.” My heart just about melted.

What was the most difficult thing you experienced?
The most difficult thing by far was when some of the children told you the stories of why they are at the home. It is absolutely heartbreaking.

What was the one thing you wished you were better prepared for? I wish I was better prepared for all the mosquitoes. I knew that I would need a lot of insect repellent but I was still in complete shock about just how bad the mosquito actually were.

Any tips for future volunteers**/ (clothing, travel, personal items, donations, sightseeing etc)
I would recommend bringing A LOT of sunscreen and insect repellent. As for donations, bringing shoes for the older children is really big need right now.

How would you describe/rate your experience working with the ABV staff in the USA?
My experience working with ABV was everything but bad. The staff was extremely helpful in answering my questions in a timely manner and complimenting my medical needs. On a scale from 1-10, it would definitely be a 10.

How was the local ABV Director and the support provided in-country?
Ms. Agatha was absolutely incredible. She is so easy going, understanding and has such a kind heart, only wanting the best for the children and you. One of the first things she told me was while she loves that you’re spending your time volunteering, she still wants you to experience Belize. One of the best directors I have ever interacted and worked for.

Personal Paragraph (ABV Program Testimonial):
Deciding to go to Belize for a month during my summer was probably one of the best decisions I have ever made. Being only 17, both my parents and myself were a little hesitant about me going for a month not only because I’m still a child but also because of my diabetes. However, all the hesitation immediately disappeared upon arrival to the home. The children, workers, and fellow volunteers were absolutely amazing! Arriving to a big hug of 25 children was incredible. During my time in Belize, I worked with the farm animals on the grounds (pigs, chickens, cats, and a baby deer), helped do laundry, cooked, racked the grounds, played with the kids, and visited almost all of Belize (Placencia, San Pedro, Caye Caulker, and San Ignacio). All in all, this trip was truly incredible that words can’t describe. I will definitely be back sooner rather than later.

Are you willing to speak to other potential ABV volunteers?
Definitely! To Sarah, I just wanted to thank you for all of your help prior to my departure. I know I was a handful with all of my questions. This trip was absolutely amazing! Thanks so much for everything!
