Volunteer in South Africa: Community & Development

Volunteer in South Africa, This is a unique township community project which has volunteers working in several developmental and educational programs in Gqebera township in Port Elizabeth. The focus of the project is to support the livelihood of underprivileged children and youth of the Walmer township. This township has diverse problems and lot of need. Poverty, child neglect, alcohol abuse and high unemployment rates are some of the many challenges this community faces on a day to day basis.

The project consists of several programs all supervised by a local ABV Coordinator. With several programs operating consecutively, volunteers can work with a varied age groups (from pre-school to teen agers). Volunteers will be part of the following programs:

Preschools – Play a big part in the individual development of the children at a preschool or crèche. The center has 20-30 children in the ages of 3-6 years all whom crave individual care and attention. You can for example; teach them the English alphabet, how to count or to learn about animals. Organizing and playing games can also be a part of your tasks and helping with meal time prep and clean up.

Primary school – The two primary schools in Walmer, each offer education to 700-800 learners in the ages of 6-12 years and have a big need for class assistants, support with remedial teaching, afterschool sports programs and general interaction with the children in the classroom.

School Sports – Under the guidance of the local coordinator volunteer help in coaching both boys as girls in the age groups of 6-18 years old. Monday to Thursday volunteers will be part of a 1.5 hour daily workout class. The children love it; they learn about the need for a warm up, learn new games and most of all have fun while being active. Tuesday and Thursday are basketball training with 12-18 year olds. Basketball is not very well known in South Africa so we start with the basics, the rules and slowly teach them to be a team and enjoy this fast and fun game.

Swimming and Dance Program – Fridays is a swimming program for the children between 6-9 years old. Swimming lessons are given weekly, at a local pool (heated in winter months). The African dance group, started by a local resident, offered local kids the chance for a meal and practice traditional dancing. This dance program has been expanded weekly workshops aimed at offering the children a fun way to dance, learn about their culture and to stimulate their creativity.

This program allows you to take part in meaningful community service work, while discovering the people, sights, sounds, and tastes of South Africa. This is a great opportunity to make life-long friends and discover that one person really can make a difference. Volunteer with us and see A Broader View of the World
