Volunteering Abroad in Concepcion Chile: Concepcion, located in central part of Chile near the Pacific coast, is Chile’s second largest city. Familiarly called Conce, Concepcion lies on the southern coast on the Bio Bio River, about 300 miles south of Santiago. An important commercial and educational city, Concepcion also boast the second largest concentration of universities in Chile, giving the city a youthful feel. The city is also a gateway to La Araucanía (the region most heavily settled by Chile’s indigenous Mapuche communities) and is close to the natural splendor of the southern Lake District.

Concepcion is home to about half a million people, but still encompasses a small town atmosphere. The climate is characterized by well-defined seasons with a warm summer and a cold winter. With lush parks, natural scenery, forests, lakes, wildlife and birding in close proximity, Concepcion is a great place to live and volunteer.
We offer the following programs in Concepcion: (1- 24 week placements with optional start date)
Nowadays the Kindergarten and nursery receives 138 underaged children, 42 toddlers and 96 children between 2 years and 3 years 11 months who live in the community of Tomé. One of the main characteristic of this project is the incorporation of the families and the community to the educational work.
The parents of the children are so poor that they cannot afford to keep their children healthy or well fed. The projects serve as a day care, kindergarten and support center. Volunteers assist the local staff with the basic needs such as feeding, bathing and clothing, helping with homework, playing sports, as well arranges games and day trips with the kids.
Teaching basic English, as well as manual labor (sweeping, painting, and gardening) may be involved. Basic in Spanish is required, as well as a positive and flexible attitude.
The rest home is a residential protected unit orientated to satisfy the elderly people’s needs, who have physical and functional problems.They need specialized attention, treatment and rehabilitation. These actions are designed to stabilize their health condition, supporting their autonomy, and improving their quality of life.
Health care volunteer placements are open to medical professionals including doctors, dentists, nurses and EMT’s. This program is also open to nursing and medical students in all medical fields. As a medical volunteer you will work with local staff in support of the health care efforts.
The aim of this rest home is to give a temporary service to people who live in grinding poverty, providing them basic services (housing, food, wardrobe, healthcare, etc.), and specialized services such as counselling, psychiatric attention, etc.in order to integrate them into society.
The persons received by this rest home are men, young men and mainly adults who live on the streets. In general the users are homeless people and often they do not have any support and help from other persons or institutions.
Health care volunteer placements are open to medical professionals including doctors, dentists, nurses and EMT’s. This program is also open to nursing and medical students in all medical fields. As a medical volunteer you will work with local staff in support of the health care efforts.

This program is orientated towards elderly people, fragile and humbled who live in grinding poverty, providing direct attention to them in their own place, by means of specific interventions which try to favor their permanence and integration into their own environment.
This program attends old men (46 %) and women (54 %) of the urban sector of the communities of Concepción, Talcahuano, Hualpén, Chiguayante, San Pedro del Mar y Tomé, through domiciled visits. The frequency of these visits depends on their individual, familiar and social characteristics of these people. The beneficiaries of the program live in poor conditions.
We have partnerships with local NGO's and private institutions that support the improvement of living conditions of children. Volunteers work at a local children’s home which doubles as an orphanage and day care. The children range in age from infancy to 12yrs old, some with mild handicaps. Volunteers assist the local staff with the basic needs such as feeding, bathing and clothing, as well arrange games and day trips with the kids. Basic Spanish is required, as well as a positive and flexible attitude.

A recently stated goal of the Chilean Ministry of Education is that Chile must become a fully bilingual country. English is taught in all schools from the first to the twelfth grades. English teaching assistants will work closely with Chilean English teachers. We have teaching placements in several small (primary and secondary) schools in Concepcion. Volunteers do not need previous teaching experience, although it would be helpful. Basic Spanish is required, as well as a positive and flexible attitude.

Accommodation at a local Spanish colonial style guesthouse or homestay option. All meals included daily. Airport transfers on arrival and departure. Our local Project Coordinators will provide full day orientation with city tour with lunch, introduction and placement in a volunteer work project. Half day (4hours) Spanish language lessons. *Additional Spanish classes can be arranged for you locally.

The project coordinator is available 24/7 in case of emergency, health-related or otherwise. They can assist in arranging sightseeing excursion before, during or after the volunteer program.
