Volunteer Abroad in Jaipur: Rajasthan is a vibrant state where tradition and history blend with contemporary life styles. Every region has its distinct dialect, food, music and dance. The varieties of dances are colorful expressions of celebration and festivity, which make the desert region come to light.
Jaipur is the capital of Rajasthan and is famously known as the Pink City. The city is steeped in history and culture. In Jaipur the past comes alive in magnificent forts and palaces, blushed pink, where once lived the maharajas. Here, rickshaws compete not only with busses and suicidal pedestrians, but also with elephants and camels. There are snake charmers, monkeys stealing shopping bags from unsuspecting shoppers, men wearing colorful turbans and hundreds of street children lining the city sidewalks.
The poverty in India is oppressive. Hundreds of millions are trapped by caste and gender discrimination. In Jaipur, there are hundreds of thousands of impoverished, runaway and orphaned children living hand-to-mouth. These poor, forgotten children live in a different world. These children are simply overlooked in their society, left to defend and survive on their own.
We work to help support these children and the local organizations that provide social welfare programs for them. We offer placements in orphanages, in health clinics, day care centers and with public health centers in Jaipur.
We offer the following programs in Jaipur:
Volunteers support a residential center for mentally challenged orphans, most who have been abandoned by their families. Over 100 children live at this orphanage and are provided education. The volunteer's activities include helping children in their education with teaching, creative activities, sports, music etc.
More than the educational activities themselves, it is the sheer presence of the volunteers, caring and showing their affection towards the children that gives them a sense of being valuable and significantly enhances their motivation, self-esteem and sense of self-worth. An additional challenges posed by the fact that these children have special needs that makes their care even more challenging for the limited resources that are available to the center. Volunteers therefore will need an ability to care and at the same time be aware of the special needs that these kids have. (Transportation costs approximately $20 per week)
This orphanage center cares for newborn children who have been abandoned at the center. About 25 newborn babies and toddlers up to age 3 years old are cared for at this center, while the center keeps itself open the possibility of these children being adopted by loving families. Volunteer activities at this project will be related to assisting the limited staff mothers on site. Daily activities include preparation of meals, changing diapers, holding babies, chasing toddlers and spending quality time with these wonderful children. (Transportation costs approximately $20 per week)
Population explosion is feared to be one of the biggest challenges as India struggles to provide care and education to a growing number of children being born in underprivileged situations making them vulnerable to a variety of ills like malnutrition, illiteracy, abuse and neglect. The key to development is to nurture the upcoming generation with good care & education. It not only translates them into valuable human resources but also insures peace, social justice and equality into society.
In Jaipur district itself the total literacy is 82.80 percent whereas the literacy rate among girl child is merely 55.52 percent. Thus focusing girl's education is of utmost need. According to state government statistics per thousand 65 children cannot complete their 3 years of their birth anniversary; majority of them are girls. The various projects being supported by volunteers aim to create opportunities where children from the fringes of society can have equal opportunity to grow. The projects are working with a variety of such groups such as:
This project acutely requires volunteers' assistance due to an utter lack of resources and to eliminate the apathy that surrounds issues of voiceless children. The activities that volunteers will be required to undertake in these projects are identifying and providing education assistance for children not attending school, daily care of underprivileged children under age 5 years in poor areas, Teaching English, computer and general arithmetic in the required project areas, participating in family visit for creating awareness about importance of education, health hazards during rag picking and child labor, beautification programs at the centers, indoor and outdoor sports activities for making children more creative and vivacious, organizing various campaigns for child rights , preparation of paintings, posters, information charts and other materials that help in creative learning and organizing paintings, music and dance workshop for children.
