Best Volunteer Reviews 2017

I really enjoyed my time in the program. Being able to spend time with the children, other ABV volunteers and staff was a life changing experience. I made many new friends and incredible memories here. I will be taking home priceless memories and a greater appreciation for the culture of Belize. I will miss the kids and I feel I am leaving a piece of my heart here in Belize. I look forward to coming back if I can to visit again.

1.-How was the local ABV Coordinator and the support provided in-country, give details?
Was picked up at the airport 10 minutes after arriving by local ABV coordinator. There was usually always someone available during the day to ask questions. Jobs were given on a needed basis. I just jumped in and help whenever possible. Tasks were flexible and based on talent and ability.

2- What was the most positive surprise you experienced?
At the program
: Everyone had a very positive cheerful attitude the work was very fun and enjoyable.
At the accommodation: Accommodations where very comfortable, clean and nice compared to what I expected. Roommates were very lovely people.
About the country: The most positive aspect of the country is the laid back, relaxing atmosphere I experienced almost everywhere I went. Hospitality and good manners seem to be engraved in the culture.

3- What was most difficult/culturalshock to experience?
At the program
: Over all the experience was very positive. I think the most difficult part of the experience will be saying goodbye.
At the accommodation: No difficulties
The country: The hot humid weather was a shock. And the bugs.

4- Any tips for future volunteers, give as many details as possible…
Clothing
: Lots of shorts and tank tops, bring flip flops and running shoes. Also bring a rain coat. Bring a few sets of clothing you don’t mind getting dirty or covered in paint.
Donations: I suggest buying items for kids and facility in Belize if possible to support local economy. In addition to the donation list provided by ABV, any donations that provide activities for children are needed, e.g. games, activity books, craft supplies, sport equipment.
Weather: Weather can change dramatically from a very sunny to down pour, bring sunscreen and bug spray (bugs get really bad at night) or buy in country.

4.1-Other things volunteers should know, about what to bring, what to do in country, what to eat, transportation, other:

  1. Most items can be bought in Belize so don’t panic if you forget to pack something. Bring work clothes, bug spray, sun block, some cash and some activity ideas for the kids.
  2. While here I was able to take a weekend trip to caye caulker. Definitely worth it and only cost $100 USD for the entire weekend.
  3. There are several nice restaurants in the area as well as several shops, grocery stories.
  4. Busses run every half hour from the orphanage area into Belize City and back cost $2-$4 Bze. if taking a taking a taxi always ask how much it will cost in Belize dollars before getting in a cab.

I stayed in a house with anywhere between 2-5 other girls. Very comfortable and clean with 4 bed rooms, 2 bathrooms, and a kitchen with sink and refrigerator. Don’t expect to have hot water but never needed it (very hot here). Felt very safe, property is fenced in with a security guard at night. Meals are very basic and good.
