First and foremost, you will have the opportunity to partake in humanitarian aid work, not only improving the lives of local people who have limited access to healthcare, but also gaining valuable exposure to the world of nursing in developing countries and communities.

Secondly, since our programs are culturally immersive – for example, you can choose to live with a host family and you’ll have free time at the weekend to explore – you will have the chance to discover a new country, somewhere you might not have thought to travel to otherwise.

Volunteers will be mentored by dedicated local healthcare professionals in regional hospitals, community clinics or health outposts, which are minimally staffed and in desperate need of assistance.

Our program philosophy

A Broader View organizes and supports mobile medical clinics, first responder training and public health education programs in the communities we partner with, in order to improve access to health services and raise awareness of disease.

Our approach to medical care is holistic: we collaborate with local staff to develop ethical, sustainable and community-led initiatives that address the root cause of disease, while providing a safe, affordable and hands-on experience for our volunteers.

Each experience is tailored to the individual, taking their specific skill set and educational background into account. This way, volunteers can make a truly meaningful contribution while continuing to strengthen and develop their professional skills in their chosen field.

A Broader View is founded on the principles of service, commitment and mutual respect. Unlike other volunteer abroad businesses, we are a nonprofit organization where the majority of program fees are reinvested into the communities we work with.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Are there any requirements?
    • Our nursing programs are designed for pre-nursing students, nursing students, licensed practical nurses (LPNs), registered nurses (RNs) and nurse practitioners. While there are no other formal requirements, we seek volunteers who are passionate, adaptable and open-minded. If you select a program in a Spanish-speaking country, Spanish speakers are always appreciated – however we do offer Spanish language immersion courses in our Central and South American locations.
  • Are there any residency or citizenship requirements?
    • No. While we’re a US-based organization, we handle requests from volunteers around the world.
  • Where can I go?
    • Our nursing and pre-nursing programs are available in Honduras, Guatemala, Peru, Nepal, Ghana, Tanzania and Zambia.
  • When can I go?
    • Whenever you like! Our volunteer programs are completely flexible, so you can choose your own start and end dates depending on what works best for you. Programs are available all year round, so the only thing you may like to take into account is the climate.
  • How long should I go for?
    • Programs last from one to 12 weeks in most locations, with most volunteers opting to stay between two and four weeks. We recommend a program length of at least two weeks, or four weeks if you’re looking to gain exposure within several departments or specialties.
  • What is the structure of your programs? Will there be in-country support? Will my family back home have a single point of contact in case of emergencies?
    • We understand that while volunteering abroad is a rewarding and often life-changing experience, there may be some challenges to face along the way. Volunteers commit to 30-40 hours minimum Monday through Friday. This structure is complemented by expert local guidance from an in-country bilingual ABV staff coordinator, plus round-the-clock US-based support.
  • What does your program fee include?
    • Program fees include: pre-trip planning and advice, in-country accommodation and meals, airport pick-up and drop-off, local orientation and arrival city tour, project placement/hospital administrative fees and in-country staff support. Our program fees are tax-deductible for US tax payers, and we also provide a platform on our website to fundraise the cost of your trip.
  • What will I be allowed to do in the hospital?
    • Our programs adhere to the Association of American Medical Colleges’ Guidelines for Premedical and Medical Students Providing Patient Care During Clinical Experiences Abroad. We recommend that all interested parties review this before applying. To summarize, volunteers will not be permitted to do anything that they would not be allowed to do in the US or Europe. Nursing and pre-nursing students will be observing patient care and procedures, including the management of diseases not present in the US. Volunteers will also be able to get involved in our global health outreach programs.
  • What does a typical work day look like?
    • Unless you sign up for afternoon language immersion classes, you will spend approximately seven or eight hours a day in the clinic or hospital, five days a week. You can also volunteer at weekends, if you choose. Trained nurses can partake in one night shift per week. You will work closely with your program coordinator to arrange a suitable program schedule.
  • Are there are specialties available?
    • Yes – these include burn nursing, maternity/delivery, community health, emergency & trauma, infection control, medical-surgical, neonatal, orthopedic, pediatric and shadowing surgery. Check each location for the specific areas we offer in each country.
  • How are flight arrangements handled?
  • Where does my money go?
    • ABV is a US nonprofit organization, which means that your program fee is used to cover placement-related costs such as accommodation, transport, food, in-country coordinator salaries, hospital fees and administrative costs. The remainder goes towards our Global Fund. This is a unique financial model which nullifies the need for external donors, and allows us to continue providing crucial medical aid to targeted communities in a sustainable manner.
  • Which vaccinations will I need?
    • As recommendations and requirements differ between countries and regions, we highly recommend that you consult our program pages well in advance of your trip, each page and country will have a description of the vaccinations we recommend. If you or your doctor have any questions about vaccinations, please email us at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..
  • Do volunteers need to provide their own accident and medical evacuation insurance?
    • Yes. We offer discounts exclusively available to ABV volunteers. Cover ranges from $29-$53 per plan. https://www.abroaderview.org/inclusions-payments/travel-health-insurance
  • What can volunteers do in their free time?
    • Your free time is your opportunity to explore, and be a tourist! Wherever you go with ABV there’s plenty to see, including the likes of Machu Picchu, Victoria Falls, Mount Kilimanjaro and the Serengeti National Park. ABV staff can help you get the most out of your free time. Thanks to long-established relationships with trusted hotels, guides and organizations, we can assist with cultural classes, tour planning and restaurant recommendations once in country.
