1.-How was the local ABV Coordinator and the support provided in-country?

Rafael was a wonderful project coordinator. He was extremely friendly, always checked in to see how everything was going, and quickly resolved any issues that came up during the project. I couldn't have asked for a better coordinator!

2- What was the most surprising thing you experienced?

At the program: The small range of dental procedures that the public hospital was able to perform. Many of the cases that came in would be 'fixable' in the states, but due to the high cost of treatment and lack of resources most of the time serious tooth decay just resulted in an extraction.

3- What was most difficult to experience?

At the program: The most difficult thing I had to overcome was definitely the language. Using my basic Spanish and hand gestures was able to get me by fine, but the more Spanish you know the more you'll be able to learn from the doctors. Take the Spanish lessons or hire the translator.

4- Any tips for future volunteers…

Clothing: I would recommend packing 'sports' clothes as it is very hot here. Also for mosquitos, going to REI and soaking a couple pairs of clothes in Pyrethrin (pretty sure I spelled that wrong) was helpful for me.

5- Personal Paragraph (ABV Program Testimonial), don’t leave blank:

I had a really nice time here in Honduras. Aside from the beautiful excursions, learning new skills in the clinic, and being able to experience a new culture, what really helped seam this trip together was the great ABV group dynamic. Rafael was an excellent resource to have. The other ABV volunteers quickly became my friends and travel-buddies. Finally, the overall generous hospitality that I've received here has really made this a standout trip.

6- How would you describe your accommodation, meals and security:

My host mom was extremely nice and caring. Just keep in mind that, at least for me, there was no AC or Wifi in the house. This wasn't a problem as I spent a lot of time with other volunteers at Rafael's house or use the cybercafé at the mall.

7- What was your favorite memory of this trip?
Program: Weekend traveling, hanging out with other ABV volunteers, becoming friends with the clinic staff, and the Navy Medical Brigade we went on one Saturday.

9 – Are you willing to speak to other potential ABV volunteers?

Of course!

10 – Can you tell us how did you find or know about A Broader View?  (You can also write on the back of the page…

I just Googled dental projects abroad and ABV came up for me.
