India has one of the fastest developing economies in the world, and is home to some of the oldest cultures and traditions that are alive today. Unfortunately, with this traditional culture comes a traditional mindset, specifically in the treatment of women. Indian women suffer from restrictions on social, political and economic levels. In addition to their limited legal rights, they also face an extensive amount of sexual assault and discrimination. Half of Indian women are married by the age of 18, and one is assaulted every 20 minutes. These daughters, wives, and sisters deserve not only equal opportunity, but respect and a chance to live a normal life. They deserve to feel safe, and to not be afraid to walk alone simply because they are women. During my research at the Institute for Peace and Justice at the University of San Diego, I was introduced to the concept of empowering women in poverty through microfinance. By educating them on basic microfinance skills and connecting them with microloan banks, we grant them the opportunity to jumpstart small businesses; utilizing what rights they have and working towards disbanding dependency. With the nonprofit organization known as A Broader View, I will be spending two weeks in Jaipur, India educating women on microfinance and helping them improve their English. I’ll be embarking on my journey in January of 2017, and am reaching out to you with the hope that you can support me as a motivated, but broke, college student. The total costs of my trip consist of volunteer fees (living, food, basic needs) and my plane ticket, coming out to approximately $2200. Any and all contributions, no matter how small, can make a great difference. If you are not in a good position to make a donation, your support and prayers for a safe and successful trip are incredibly appreciated. Thank you so much for your support to this important program!
