Travel protection is about allowing travelers to have a less stressful experience – if something happens to go wrong, you can rest assured you’ll have assistance and reimbursement for covered reasons. During times of crisis, travel protection can be invaluable.  Purchasing travel insurance doesn’t mean you need to break the bank. In fact, travel protection is relatively inexpensive if you know where to look!

A Broader View Volunteers has formed partnerships with companies which offer very affordable travel protection plans exclusively for volunteers and non-profit organizations. While we have noticed most for-profit volunteer companies offer their volunteers coverage at a hefty surcharge (+ US$200-$300), A Broader View volunteers have protection plan options ranging US$29 to $53. They offer First Payer Coverage – easy claims handling, less time and hassle to receive reimbursement for eligible losses from us first, with no deductible. Funds may be recovered from your medical or other collectible insurance plans.

For example - Premium Plan can be used for one or multiple trips within the policy term. Each trip can be up to 180 days in length. Card price is a one-time, all-inclusive charge. No age restrictions, no deductible, no hidden fees.

Premium Plan: $53 per person

  • Accident Medical Expense - $50,000
  • Dental - $750
  • Illness Medical Expense - $50,000
  • Emergency Evacuation - $500,000
  • Security Evacuation - $100,000
  • Repatriation of Remains - $25,000
  • Accidental Death & Dismemberment - $75,000
  • Missed Connection - $500
  • Trip Delay - $500
  • Baggage & Personal Effects Loss - $2,000
  • Baggage Delay - $200
  • Type of Trip - Single or Multi-Trip
  • Trip Length - Up to 180 Days

Money Super Market

Money Super MarketIf you are thinking of taking some time out to volunteer abroad, while it's great you will be helping others, you will need to look after yourself first with the right kind of travel insurance.
However, an online search for 'volunteer travel insurance' will not help. This is because theoretically, there is no such thing as volunteers travel insurance - you will need to look for gap insurance instead.

The sooner you start planning the more effective your efforts will be not only for fundraising and crowdfunding, but also for coordinating grants and scholarships.

Tips for Finding Financial Aid

  • Ask your parents if they have an employer donation match program
  • Check local organizations like Kiwanis Club or Rotary Club
  • Contact your advisor and ask about scholarships specific to your college major
  • Visit your study abroad office or language department to ask about grants/aid for traveling
  • Look into federal aid options: Federal Student Aid

Scholarship and Grant Resources

University Funds or Scholarships

Your university or college may be the best place to start looking for scholarships to help you realize your dream of volunteering abroad. Get in touch with the International Office on your campus and tell them your plans – they may offer stipends, grants, or scholarships to help you raise your volunteer fee.

Corporate Matching Gifts

Employers often offer a matching program which can be a great resource for employees wishing to dedicate their vacation to volunteer work. Inquire at work to see if your company provides this service.

A Broader View Volunteers does not only help student volunteers decide if the health care, teaching, child care, veterinary and many other careers path is right for them, it also opens their eyes to the culture, the needs of those who live in communities with limited resources, and the life-long friendships they will make. Medicine and Dental, Medicine in Honduras

"Volunteering to provide medical and dental care here in La Ceiba Honduras was one of the most memorable and rewarding experiences of my life. The people here really need the care and the equipment that we donated. It was also rewarding being able to perform and teach some extremely useful Oral & Maxillofacial surgical procedures on the patients and doctors working here (respectively). I would highly recommend doing this program here in La Ceiba Honduras to anyone.."

Who are we?

ABV has been operating international volunteer programs since 2007 and importantly we run all our own programs, with ABV Staff on the ground, under the direction of the local grass root organizations. We have an alumni base of many thousands of volunteers a year, we have a 100% safety record and health risk management and provide huge impact on the ground through our long-term programs.

These, in turn, have led to partnerships with NGOs, universities and government bodies around the world for the development of our programs, including the likes of Sloth and monkey sanctuary in Costa Rica, Elephant Sanctuary in India, Save Orphans (Peru, Nepal, Uganda), Health Missions (Honduras, Ecuador, Tanzania, Mongolia), and Teachers without borders (Chile, Guatemala, Zambia, Belize), amongst various others.

The high level of our reputation has lead to partnerships with many Universities and Schools such as Bridgeport University, University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, Dayton University, Temple, Drexel and many more to help with their students’ education and training.

WHO ARE WE LOOKING TO PARTNER WITH?

We are looking for partnerships with Grass-root Organization, NGOs and government agencies working on local, nationwide issues, that have a track record of successful impact, and are open to expand their program in partnership with ABV over a period of at least 3 years. The host organizations will manage the project work. ABV¡¡¡ staff will manage the project participants and will work in support of the host organization.

The Coordinators package will be in the form of:

  • Experienced and skilled staff
  • Trained international participants
  • Local capacity building initiative to train local staff and community members
  • Project equipment
  • Project running costs

In return, the host organization must be able to supply:

  • Detailed project brief and direction
  • Ongoing project direction and feedback
  • Local logistical advice
  • Visa and legal support and advice

For more information, contact us by email, chat online, or phone Contact us

No matter what your age, A Broader View can organize a suitable and cost-effective international volunteer experience for you. Over the last few years A Broader View has hosted an increasing number of seasoned travelers looking for a fulfilling international volunteer program.

Some our most dedicated and repeat ABV volunteers have been older, mature travelers. A Broader View programs thrive on the skills and patience which older volunteers bring to a project site. Skilled professionals are a vital asset to our local partners, and openly welcome doctors, nurses, dentists, and teachers at overcrowded and understaffed clinics, schools, orphanages and hospitals.

What our ABV alumni say about their experiences?

"A Broader View was incredible in preparing us for this journey. I was very nervous, but ABV took us step by step through all the processes we need to ready us for this trip. Also, we felt very comfortable asking questions and they were immediately responsive. Sarah, Oliver and their staff portrayed a very good picture of what we would be experiencing, thank you."

It seems they are satisfied with their lives, even though they don´t have much. I was also glad to have an opportunity to learn Spanish and meet travelers from around the world."

"I had a fantastic experience all the way around with ABV. From the time I inquired about their programs, to almost the day before I left to come to Costa Rica, ABV was continually in touch with me making sure everything was arranged, taken care of, answered any questions I had. ABV is a very professional organization and one I would volunteer with again."

I liked the country coordinator immediately. She took me into town and showed me where I could buy things I needed, and many times called to see if everything was going Okay. Nice follow up that I had not experienced with other country coordinators with other volunteer organizations.

For most volunteers the biggest motivation to join an international volunteering program is to be fully immersed in a new culture. A Broader View Volunteers knows living with a local host family is the best way to do that.

ABV Homestays - Our host families are hand-picked for security, location, comfort, and friendliness. Many host families are partners with our programs - for example, a teacher or principal at one of our partner schools or a nurse/doctor at one of our medical placements or the director of an orphanage.

You can expect modest but comfortable accommodations. Families live in secure houses in safe neighborhoods and are closely screened and monitored, with regular checkups, including before every new volunteer moves in.  Most families will offer laundry and internet services in their homes (extra fee).

Expect to eat like a local with home-cooked meals.  Food is at the heart of a society so be ready to eat your fill of local cuisine! If you have any specific dietary requirements or restrictions, please let us know when you apply, and we will do our best to accommodate them.

To validate our commitment to be a positive influence in the communities we work, host families are financially compensated. To ensure a family is suitable for ABV service, they are interviewed for friendliness and to make sure they are motivated by the right reasons.  Volunteers should expect to feel like a member of the family.  Host families will welcome you into their family and home.  You will find your hosts are eager to share their customs with you and eager to learn about your culture in return.

There are some locations where host families are not possible, mainly on the majority of our Conservation Projects or some orphanage projects. But rest assure, these housing alternatives has been evaluated and selected for quality and comfort.

Office hours at A Broader View Volunteers are 11:00am to 4:00pm US ET time Monday to Friday. Feel free to contact us anytime 24 hours, 7 days a week. If you ring outside of our office hours, leave a message and we will get back to you as soon as possible.

The safety of our volunteers is paramount for A Broader View Volunteers. The majority of ABV Volunteers travel and serve without major incident. However, programs are based in some of the least developed countries and in some of the most remote areas in the world, health, safety, and security risks are an unavoidable part of life and international service. To address these concerns and to safeguard the well-being of our program participants, A Broader View has safety protocols and security procedures for all programs:

  • Security All project sites, local in-country staff and accommodation sites have gone through a rigorous filter and have been hand selected. ABV has spent almost 11 years cultivating and strengthening of our local partnerships & host family relationships. In-country staff visits, daily research of local conditions, as well as weekly checkup of our host families and accommodations are conducted. Site selection is based on criteria including; access to medical, banking, postal, and other essential services; access to communication, transportation, and local markets; availability of adequate housing and living arrangements.

  • Overseas Staff and communication Our local staff support is immeasurable in their professionalism and dedication to the volunteers under their charge. The majority of ABV staff coordinators have been involved since the very start (over 11 years) and are well experienced handling the unexpected such as situations where volunteer students become ill, suffer accidents, are the victims of pick pockets. ABV staff is trained to react in a responsible and levelheaded way when emergencies do arise. They will do whatever is necessary to assure this, whether this means obtaining prompt and appropriate medical attention, embassy intervention or local authorities.

  • Pre-Departure Guide Your ABV account will have a detailed volunteer guide. Volunteers are provided country information, packing lists, customs and language information, and much more. ABV also provides information about visa requirements, vaccinations, climate, weather, and safety and security issues specific to the country. Download the Volunteer Guide from your ABV account once you pay the deposit.

  • Volunteer Summary A full month before traveling volunteers are provided a detailed account of their volunteer project (including supply/donation list), arrival procedures, emergency contact information, accommodation details and the full name, phone and email of their local ABV Coordinator. You will get an email and you can check in your ABV account all the summary of your placement after due balance is paid.

  • Host Families and accommodations Our local volunteer guesthouses, onsite project dorms and host families have been hand-picked. A Broader View accommodation have specific standards for the hygiene, cleanliness, location and comfortable living conditions for our volunteers. Telephone access is available 24/7 and most sites have internet access (extra fees). Follow the rules and regulations of the host family, curfew, clean up your bedroom, help with house shores, you are part of the family so you have shores. Respect common areas, don’t leave personal items around.

  • Arrival Meeting/Orientation ABV programs provide a customized arrival plan. We can arrange your arrival/pick up at the airport, bus station or local hotel. Start your program with peace of mind, having the local ABV staff meeting you when you arrive in-country. Volunteers are provided orientation before starting their program. Orientation schedules vary from country to country but will include acclimation tours of the local town/city, accommodation neighborhood, geolocation map description, program location, main interesting points in the city or area. Emergency and medical protocols will be discussed and also address safety and security issues specific to the community volunteers live and work in.

Every staff member of A Broader View is committed to providing volunteers with the support they need to successfully meet the challenges they will face to have a safe, healthy, and productive service. The success of each ABV volunteer is our prime goal. We rely on volunteers to exercise personal responsibility and demonstrate both a keen awareness of the world around them and a willingness to adjust their behavior in a manner that will enhance their safety and well-being. In the end, your efforts will be rewarded with an incredible, unique experience.

The emergency lines are staffed by an A Broader View representative:

  • Communicate late/missed/flight connections during travel days
  • Notify a Volunteer of an emergency (e.g. critical illness or death of a family member)
  • Respond to family questions about a Volunteer's status (if problem occurring in-country)

A Broader View Program Review: Logan, Honduras Medical Program

“I had a great time in La Ceiba, Honduras. I did not feel unsafe or threatened at any time. My work was great and fulfilling at both the old hospital and the school. My host family was excellent and accommodating, and the food – especially the local food – was very delectable.

“All of the people, from the children to the patients at the hospital were very nice and respectful. I had a lot of fun with the other volunteers and I highly recommend being outgoing and personable… it will make you life way easier if you can hang out with friends and commiserate after a long day of work.

“I had very good Spanish entering into the program, but after 2 weeks of immersion my Spanish is crisp and fluent; I truly valued the ABV experience as a life-changing event. I am willing to speak with others about my experience.”
