Putting together a vacation in a post-COVID world can be worrying. New variations of the virus have been cropping up, so mass gatherings may still need to be avoided. However, if you can get out early for fun and sight-seeing, mask or double-mask for group outings, and avoid standing in too many lines, you could still get a break and stay healthy.

Essential Health Tips For Your Post-COVID Vacation

Putting together a vacation in a post-COVID world can be worrying. New variations of the virus have been cropping up, so mass gatherings may still need to be avoided. However, if you can get out early for fun and sight-seeing, mask or double-mask for group outings, and avoid standing in too many lines, you could still get a break and stay healthy.

Get Out Early

If at all possible, try to be the first people at the museum doors, the first people on the amusement park ride, or the first group on the hiking trail. The more congestion you're facing, the greater your risk of getting too close.

Of course, you'll want to carry gloves, sanitizer and wipes. While restaurant workers are doing their best, knowing that your table is fully disinfected before you get your food will give you peace of mind. Swap your purse for your backpack and carry your own disinfecting gear.

Pre-Buy Your Tickets

Get your tickets purchased and have them printed out or on your phone before you go to any venue. Don't stand in line for anything more than you have to. Order your travel groceries online, or treat yourself to more delivered meals while out on your family vacation.

Not only can pre-bought tickets speed up your entry into many venues, but it can

  • reduce costs
  • be paired with other venues and expand your trip
  • give you discounts to other venues in other cities during the next vacation season

For example, a CityPass card in New York can get you into the Museum of Natural History, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and many other venues. One card with many options for this year's vacation, and next year you may get a discount for Philadelphia or Boston.

Go Glamping

If your idea of roughing it is a bit more comfortable than a tent, invest in a Berkey water filter, pack up a bunch of food, games, puzzles and hiking gear, and go glamping.

Glamping can include

  • renting a cabin
  • staying in a yurt
  • relaxing in a grown-up treehouse

Many glamping sites are located in or near National Forests, so do your best to be fully organized before you get on the road. Shopping spots can be hard to find; many of these sites can be pretty isolated. To save time, buy as much as you'll need for your stay so you can hang out and relax.

Strive for Closeness

It can be tempting to do a lot of running around on your vacations. After all, time off is precious and you want to make the best of it. However, running around can put you in danger of unnecessary exposure to illness. If you have something special you really want to see, plan an early day, get in, enjoy, and get out. Plan to spend the later hours of the day back in your rental home or hotel room. As the crowds build up, do your best to cuddle up with your loved ones and stay put.

If possible, consider renting a house instead of just a hotel room. By the time you factor in restaurant meals, renting a house can be a much better deal, give everyone more room and make eating out a special event, rather than a requirement.

Be Ready to Wait

The year 2020 was terribly stressful and many of us skipped our vacations. If you really need a break and to get away, a glamping trip or a stay in VRBO may not be exactly the excitement you need, but it can reduce your risk of viral exposure due to Covid-19.

Take a break from your ordinary schedule and location by renting a house with a great view, a yurt in a winery or a treehouse in the redwoods. Pack in all the food and puzzles you can manage for four or five days and unwind in peace. Treat yourself to a Berkey for your trip and put it on the counter when you get back home for a yummy glass of filtered water whenever you want a glass.
