Volunteer Travel & Health Insurance

Top 9 Travel Insurance to Volunteer Abroad

It’s time to buy travel insurance when you know…

1. Your Travel Schedule and dates
2. If you’re taking a single volunteer trip or multiple gap year trips within the next year.
3. You have already paid your fees toward your trip

Travel/health insurance can get set into short-term and long-term coverage plans. One plan can only cover you for a single trip up to 60 days, while another will cover you for multi-trips up to 180 days. Make sure you check the options and fine print of each insurance, so you get the coverage during the time you are overseas.

Many travelers get insurance 45-60 days before departure, or after they make their first volunteer deposit. If you only need your name and trip dates to buy travel insurance, why wait? Make sure you get coverage as soon as you can, or it might become “too late.”

What coverage do you need as a volunteer traveler?

While the following is not an exhaustive list of all the coverages available with travel insurance plans, it describes those that are most useful to volunteer travelers.

  • Evacuation coverage
  • Medical expense coverage
  • Trip interruption coverage
  • Trip cancellation coverage
  • Baggage coverage provides a certain amount of reimbursement for lost, stolen or destroyed luggage.
  • Baggage delay coverage
  • Accidental death and dismemberment
  • Repatriation coverage.
  • Travel assistance services

What’s the difference between my health insurance and travel insurance?

Will your existing health insurance policy cover you if you need medical treatment overseas? We hear this question a lot and the answer is most likely no because most national health insurance plans stop as soon as you leave your home country. This is the main difference between health insurance and travel insurance, and this is why we insist you have adequate travel insurance.

The best way to be sure is to check over your current health policy. If you’re in any doubt, contact your insurance provider and ask them. For more information about the difference between travel insurance and health insurance, this guide from World Nomads travel insurance is useful.

As always, make sure you seek a policy that is right for your personal circumstances and travel plans.
