Review Maya Barnes Volunteer in Costa Rica Sea Turtles Conservation Program

1- How was the local ABV Coordinator and the support provided in-country?

He was incredibly helpful and easy to get in touch with. I had to change my flights and he made it no trouble at all. I would have liked to know just a little more about the Project and accommodations in before left.
ABV: all the information is in the volunteer guide provided prior traveling, volunteers can always call abv if need more information.

2- What was the most surprising thing you experienced?
The amount of free time was very surprising, we only worked about 3-4 hours a day, and most of it was at night, so the days were very free. Not a bad thing just surprising.
ABV: our volunteers can always ask for more work, its not limited to only 4 hours.

3- What was most difficult to experience?
There started out with way to many people in the house, but once some left, it was much nicer. At one point there were 16 women haring one bathroom.

4- Any tips for future volunteers… (clothing, travel, personal items, donations)

Do a lot of research about thing to do, and bring more money than you think because it is very expensive to do things in Costa Rica.

5.1-Other things volunteers should know:
a. Bring sheets for your bed. As stated in your orientation guide
b. Lots of fun free time

6- Personal Paragraph (ABV Program Testimonial):

This program was really amazing and the work done benefits not only the turtles but the ABV volunteers and also the locals. Most every local that I talked to about the program was so thankful for our work, and I think that is very important.

7- How would you describe your accommodation, meals, security (e: host family, on-site, shared)

I have no complaints about accommodation, the meals were great (be ready for rice and beans), I felt very safe, and aside from it being crowded it was a clean and happy environment. You can buy snacks or eat in the nearby town.

8- What was your favorite memory of this trip?
Seeing 65 olive ridley turtles hatch right after seeing one lay her eggs.

9- How was the ABV USA support prior traveling?

Helpful

10 – Are you willing to speak to other potential ABV volunteers?
