1- How was the local ABV Coordinator and the support provided in-country?
The coordinator and his team at the ABV were great, they tried to make us feel very welcome and tried to make sure we had everything we needed.
2- What was the most surprising thing you experienced?
There was no electricity during the day, I didn't mind it, but for the locals it made it very difficult. Also more expensive than I thought it would be, and how developped Lusaka was ( in some parts).
3- What was most difficult to experience?
Saying goodbye to Taonga and Langewee.
4- Any tips for future volunteers… (Clothing, travel, personal items, donations)
Bring a tent for traveling around, jeans, money. Try and get into as many projects you can, always be open to talk to people and help out whenever you get the chance!
5- Personal Paragraph (ABV Program Testimonial):
Zambia is filled with very friendly people, do not be "upset" by being always questioned and called Muzungu. Nchima is very nice but can make you gain a few Kg ( pounds).
6- How would you describe your accommodation, meals, security (e: host family, on-site, shared)
What to put? I was a bit disapointed with the orphange work, I did not find it challenging enough as the kids were actually babies , so thanks to ABV , we got put in contact with a local school and made very good friends with the head master so we ended helping out at the school which was great. The host family was great, Olivia, their kids and nephews are very kind. It's also very nice to get to stay with a local family. Also, volunteers if you don't know where to go : go to countries of Africa , I was not ill once , and i never felt unsafe!
7- What was your favorite memory of this trip?
Accommodation was very good simple but had everything we needed it was in a very quiet area, so not much of a social life. The meals were basic but still very tasty.
8- How was the ABV USA support prior traveling?
Working at the school. But also the trip to Vic Falls and Botwana national park.But I also enjoyed the bus rides, they were always fun.
